About this item

Common Sense

Common Sense is a booklet published by Thomas Paine in 1775-1776 in support of the Thirteen Colonies' independence from Great Britain. Paine marshaled moral and political arguments in simple and appealing writing to persuade regular people in the colonies to struggle for egalitarian rule. It was published anonymously on January 10, 1776, at the start of the American Revolution, and it immediately made a sensation . It was widely marketed and circulated, and it was read aloud in pubs and public gathering places. It sold and circulated the most copies of any book produced in American history in relation to the population of the colonies at the time (2.5 million). It is still the best-selling American title as of 2006.
