The Experimental Housing Project (PREVI), Lima - Design and Technology in a New Neighborhood

This publication is a bilingual (English and Spanish) book on social housing in Latin America, sponsored by the United Nations and the Government of Peru, “The Experimental Housing Project, (PREVI), Lima - Design and Technology in a New Neighbourhood”. It recounts the eponymously named project which involved the design and building of a new neighbourhood of 450 units, designed to grow from small to large. These units were based on the concept of low-rise, high density, earthquake resistent urbanism. This book, which includes the design, building methods and planning of the PREVI project will be undoubtedly of great interest for universities, faculty, students, architects and urban planners. The content of this publication was recently previewed at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and was featured in their recent “Latin America in Construction 1955-1980” . Additionally, as part of the symposium “Latin American From PREVI to the Present”, elements of this book were spotlighted by the Architectural League of New York and the Columbia University Latin Lab. Launched in October 2015 at a gala event in Columbia “The Experimental Housing Project, (PREVI), Lima” is a publication by the University of Los Andes in Bogota and contains a prologue by Kenneth Frampton as well as essays by the late Charles Correa and others. As chief architect and director of the Proyecto Experimental de Vivienda (PREVI), I am very proud to offer my new work recounting my conception and direction of this unique international social housing project. Houses were amongst others designed by internationaly well-known architects from different countries, including James Sterling, Christopher Alexander, Fumihiko Maki, Aldo Van Eyck as well as some Peruvian architects.
