About this item

Adulting With Food Allergies: Navigating Independence After Leaving Home

This book is a guide for young adults living on their own and managing the day-to-day challenges of surviving and thriving with severe food allergies. Living on your own for the first time with the risk of anaphylaxis can create stress and anxiety in environments that others take for granted. Use this book to identify allergy risks in college, work, and social settings and find strategies to manage them. Learn about your legal rights as someone with severe food allergies. Also, practice brainstorming ways to handle common food allergy conflict situations. Specific topics include living with roommates, advocating for yourself with college administrators, socializing at parties and bars, allergies in the employment setting, as well as tips for cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping. I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan where my husband and I have raised three sons, two of which have severe food allergies. I have spent much of my parenting life advocating for food allergy and diabetes awareness and safety. As both of my son's began their own lives and moved away from home, I realized there was a need for a book on food allergies that focused on independence. How to handle situations involving college administrators, co-workers, roommates, dating, socializing, and alcohol are topics that teenagers and young adults with food allergies have to navigate. Adulting With Food Allergies : Navigating Independence After Leaving Home is my first book and was written for teenagers, young adults and their parents alike. I completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois and my doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Rochester. I am also a Licensed Psychologist.
