What do we know of the heterogeneous group of persons known only as “the peasantry,” in Saint Lucia’s history? What do we know of their contribution to the economy? To add one more layer to this intricate fabric of questions which sets the tone for this book, why were they referred to as “the peasantry” and was this term and its connotations fitting for this group? This book examines the contribution of a group who often appear in our region’s historical records under the misnomer of “peasants.” In Saint Lucia, their activities helped the economy in ways that have not received enough recognition. This book focuses on sharing more details on the many ways in which they indeed carried the economy of Saint Lucia on their shoulders.
