TED, as you may know, stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design. The original conference began in 1984. TEDx, the independently organized offshoot, was launched in 2009 with a single premise: That great ideas should not be confined to any one city, institution, or industry. I received my first license to organize a TEDx event in February 2020 and I’ve organized and/or been a part of five events in a span of five years. Most importantly, I’ve interviewed and worked with over 105 TEDx speakers, fellow organizers, and enthusiasts. They would often ask me, “What makes a great TEDx talk?” Is it the caliber of the speaker? Is it the idea alone or the shape you give it? Is it based on the speaker’s performance? What I’ve come to believe is this: The best TEDx talks are great personal essays. A good TEDx talk, like a good personal essay, begins with perspective. Especially for speakers who want to talk about their personal lives, one has to be willing to look at oneself objectively. After all, the number one enemy of a great personal essay is self-righteousness. One should be able to poke fun of oneself, question their belief and even go as far as create some sort of internal drama or self-conflict. It requires voice, argument, structure but also vulnerability. You have to be willing to tell the truth, even if that truth feels too small or too strange or too obvious to matter. If it matters to you, it may matter to someone else. This anthology gathers 55 TEDx talks delivered between 2023 and 2026, written by speakers I’ve personally worked with. The speakers range in age, background, and discipline. Some are scientists. Others are artists, entrepreneurs, educators, activists, or simply people with something to say. One of the entries are editorial picks—talks that may not have received wide public attention, but which TED has highlighted on their website and channel. Each chapter in this book loosely groups talks by theme, though the boundaries, like the talks themselves, are porous. This freedom can be scary and most, if not all, speakers, struggle with the blank page. Some even withdraw days before the event. But those who make it to the stage often discover that speaking clearly, honestly, and with care is one of the most powerful things a person can do.
