The .09 %. DNA Variance: BIGFOOT QUEST MAGAZINE

Across decades of eyewitness reports, footprint casts, alleged vocalizations, and anecdotal encounters collected by researchers such as Dr. Jeff Meldrum, John Bindernagel, Ray Harwood, and numerous field investigators, the figure of the Sasquatch has persisted as a hypothetically real biological entity. While physical remains have yet to be conclusively presented to science, one of the most intriguing lines of reasoning concerns genetics. If Sasquatch exists, what would its DNA reveal? Could it be far closer to Homo sapiens than previously imagined? This essay advances the hypothesis that the alleged Sasquatch—if understood as a relict hominin—could differ from Homo sapiens by less than 1% of its DNA sequence, perhaps in the vicinity of 0.9% or even 0.09% . By using known comparisons among humans, chimpanzees, Denisovans, Neanderthals, and modern primate species, this essay argues that such a close genetic relationship is scientifically plausible and consistent with behavioral, anatomical, and ecological patterns reported in field research. 1. The Genetic Context: Why Less Than 1% Is Significant but Not Impossible To understand the hypothesis, it is essential to contextualize known genetic distances among primates and extinct hominins: Humans and chimpanzees differ by approximately 1.2% of base pairs and around 4% when indels (insertions/deletions) are included . - Humans and gorillas differ by ~1.6%. - Humans and Neanderthals differ by as little as 0.12% in overall genome sequence. - Human-to-human variability is often cited at about 0.1% . These numbers reveal a striking pattern: Even very small percentages of genetic difference can produce major anatomical and behavioral distinctions. Thus, if Sasquatch were a relict Homo species—possibly a sister lineage to archaic humans—it is scientifically conceivable that its DNA divergence from modern humans could fall in the 0.1%–1.0% range. Such closeness would not make Sasquatch human, but it would place it within the boundary of the genus Homo , similar to Neanderthals, Denisovans, or the hypothetical Homo heidelbergensis -derived giants some researchers propose.
