About this item

SIX MILE HOUSE ON SHADY CREEK: A kid's life and adventures in the forties

This book is the first volume of my memoires as a pathologist, beginning with the arrival of my Grandpa Conrad in Randolph Township in Southwest Ohio. We lived in the Six Mile House, consisting of a Shell gas station, a grocery store and a saloon, the only bar in the township. Growing up, I spent considerable time in the store stocking shelves, pumping gas and kibitzing in the bar. The adjacent Shady Creek and surrounding neighborhood occupied most of my free time and entertainment. I found the creek and its contents and occupants, fascinating and at times, exciting. When not playing and exploring the neighborhood with friends and cousins, I spent more and more time reading and playing games and entertaining myself in the house. Otherwise, being with my parents and siblings was usually copacetic, except for the usual hassling with my two younger sisters. We attended grade school and Church at St. Rita's in Shiloh until we moved to a farm after graduation from grade school. For the following two years I lived a dual life, working on the farm and attending high school and the university in Dayton through out my teenage years.
