Nancy Shevlin has what looks like the perfect life. Married to a cardiologist, she lives in a showpiece mid-century-modern home. No domestic detail is too small to escape her attention. A doting mother, she voraciously reads parenting books, desperate to help her nine-year-old son Jimmy, who absolutely hates school and leaves a trail of chaos wherever he goes. None of the books help, however. Calls home from teachers, fights with other children, and constant arguing about video games wear Nancy out and cause ongoing conflict with her husband Mike. Is Jimmy oppositional defiant? Does he have ADHD? Is Nancy just a bad parent? She begins to wonder if she is the problem and decides to start working on herself. Nancy’s odyssey of self-discovery only adds to the conflict in the Shevlin home. Will she be able to save her marriage and give her son the help he desperately needs?
