Martin Eden by Jack London is a powerful and tragic novel first published in 1909. It tells the story of a working-class man’s rise to literary fame and his ultimate spiritual collapse. The novel is widely seen as semi-autobiographical and reflects many of London's own struggles with poverty, fame, and class. 🔹 Overview of the Plot Martin Eden is a rugged, uneducated sailor living in Oakland, California. After defending a wealthy young man in a street fight, he is introduced to Ruth Morse , the man’s sister, who is cultured and refined. Martin quickly falls in love with Ruth, and she becomes both his romantic ideal and his inspiration to rise above his humble beginnings. Determined to become worthy of her and her social class, Martin embarks on an intense path of self-education, devouring literature and philosophy, and deciding to become a writer. He struggles in poverty for years, sending out stories and essays to magazines, all of which are rejected. Ruth supports his efforts at first, but her family looks down on his ambitions and rough background. Eventually, Ruth breaks off their engagement due to pressure from her family and Martin's lack of success. Ironically, just after this rejection, Martin's writing begins to gain attention. He becomes famous, and the literary world and the same people who once ignored or dismissed him now praise him.
