"The Carnahan Journal" is more than just a historical document; it is an invitation to explore a world rich with discovery, reflection, and the spirit of adventure. This is the journey of James Henry Carnahan down the Missouri River in September and October of 1867. He started at Helena City, Montana and traveled in a four-horse wagon to Fort Benton, Montana where he built a Mackinaw boat with a team of men and started down the Missouri River. He and his team stayed at government forts, as well as forts of the North West Fur Company, along the way. He faced freezing weather, boat damage, and interactions with the indigenous tribes of the areas he went through. He also had numerous run-ins with steamboats of this time period. James Henry Carnahan is my 3rd great-grandfather, on my mother's side. My grandmother, Frances Shelburne, gave me a copy of this journal when I was in high school and it has always been a source of historical fascination to hear his words describe things that we can now only read in history books. I have put his words into modern language, as well as included his original text within this book, to hopefully make reading it smoother for the reader. -Frances Poindexter (editor)
