In 2189 the population of the world lives under ground to escape radiation caused by the previous war. The Artifact Exploration Program opens up for young kids. It’s meant to train them to explore the earth as one of the children will be picked to go up to the surface at the end of the summer. Thirteen-year-old Leif is a boy with a bland personality, but after being invited to the Artifact Exploration Program, everything forces him to change. Even his classmates convince him that the program director, Mr. Wright, knows something about the program that he won’t tell anyone else. Between classes, Leif and his newfound friends discover more and more evidence for this theory and when all the pieces finally come together, it's too late.
