Modern Chess Eccentricities and Where to Play Them

In 1885, Major George Hope Verney published Chess Eccentricities , devoted to a description of a multitude of Chess variants. This book seeks to emulate Verney by listing Chess variants available to play on the internet. Approximately 200 variants are sorted by type and placed in different chapters. No effort has been made to give an exhaustive listing of all known variants. Each chapter contains a brief description of the individual Chess games and a citation to a location on the internet where the games may be played against other players or a computer program. The final chapter contains several variants which the author invented, and which cannot be found on the internet. Movements of (and figurines for) any unfamiliar pieces can be found in the “Catalog of Chess Pieces and Their Moves” beginning on page 3. In diagramming the array of the pieces on enlarged boards, I have saved space and cut down on cost by omitting the empty squares.
