This is a K-3 supplement or homeschool study of chicken care that encompasses the standards for history, mathematics, and sciences. Written and illustrated by Stacy Tate who has been helping and teaching people about chickens for almost 20 years. This book is meant to teach as well as entertain and is filled with original colorful drawings. Children and adults alike can learn from this paperback that includes coloring pages, puzzle pages, and worksheets. For the parents who like to keep records of what the child has done for school requirements, dotted lines to cut on to free the worksheets from the spine have been added. By the end of the book, your child will know more about chickens than most adults. Without giving too many spoilers, your child will know how to keep chickens healthy, how to spot health problems, how to pick feeders and waterers, and even know how to pick the right breed for your climate. Your child will also know what a landrace is, how chicken shows started, how chickens spread across the world, and chicken's role in human history (just to mention a few key points). Full discloser, there are some hands-on activities listed in the book. However, they will not break the bank. Wow, I know the age range for this book is for K-3, but I am in my mid 30s and I learned so much and had a fun time doing it. This has been so informative for my homeschool boys! We are gearing up to get chickens and this curriculum was everything we needed to know and more to get started. My boys thoroughly enjoyed this. The illustrations are clear and intriguing and the activities are engaging and a great way to add in math, reading, etc. There is even a recipe to try.
