Be A Giraffe

Be a Giraffe is the story of Ubuntu. She is a giraffe but she is a metaphor for teaching young people about ethical behavior and conduct. Written in a graphic novel style with colorful illustrations by art therapist Amy Huxtable, Be a Giraffe will engage learners of all ages. Author and founder of Whistleblowers of America, Jacqueline Garrick, advises that "it can be a teaching tool for business ethics or provide perspective for psychosocially safe workspaces." Be a Giraffe touches on aspects related to leadership, civility, inclusivity and character development along with goals for resilience and social justice. It includes worksheets that can be completed in connection with classroom instructions or as a stand alone tool for self-analysis. Since self-care and personal growth are themes throughout, there are activities outlined in Be a Giraffe that allow for creativity through the use of mandala designs and a guided meditation created by South African mindfulness practitioner June Bellamy. "Be a Giraffe" becomes a mantra for rightdoing. It is a reminder for making good decisions, fair treatment, and remaining resilient in a world that may not be just. There is corruption in many places in our world. So our homes, schools and workplaces need to find pathways for important conversations about ethical behavior, character development, and a personal code of conduct. We must be able to act like a giraffe, stand tall, and stick our necks out even when it might be scary to do so because the ethics we teach people today are the leaders of tomorrow.
