Delightful, funny, and engaging from beginning to end. Dez has a way of moving through the world while embracing people for exactly who they are, creating a special lens for exploring culture, identity, and all the things that shape us. Coming from his background in cultural anthropology and unique perspective as a Sierra-Leonean Canadian working in Jamaica, Dez Kamara hones his natural ability as a storyteller to illuminate everything from daily life to the inner workings of NGOs. With roots in Sierra Leone, a current life in Canada, an academic background, and a lifelong love for reggae music it would be hard to imagine anyone better suited to reflect on time spent immersed in Jamaica. Using the vantage point of his hybrid cultural experience, he’s able to draw comparisons between “what I experience in my country of birth, Jamaica where I worked, and Canada where I live.” His insider’s perspective of non-profit work and outsider’s perspective of adapting to a new culture both highlight that, “The best way to enjoy a different culture is to put aside your assumptions and stereotypes and see what you can learn and take with you.”
