The first of three curses was fulfilled. The town of Ceginia is no more, having succumbed to the Lich King's Heart Rot curse. Sei is still bound and obligated to finish two more curses for Zhil, a mage who learned the forbidden soul magic and forced a contract with him. They escaped almost unscathed from a group of mage hunters, who had been hunting for Zhil for many years, in the aftermath of Ceginia. Suffering from Zhil's poor handling of Sei's ghost magic, they both fell into a state of magical exhaustion. Sei is taunted by the nightmare of his rebirth into the Bleeding King, only to awaken to the news of the elusive Weeping King, another lich, being sighted around his realm.
