Scholars estimate that we have fewer than half of Joseph Smith’s public sermons recorded - perhaps even fewer. While teachings recorded in church periodicals, newspapers, council minutes, personal journals, and memoirs have peppered hundreds of articles, no one has ever published a compilation of all of Joseph’s teachings as contained in those resources. This volume of Joseph Smith’s Doctrines & Insights: the Forgotten Teachings begins the monumental task of compiling everything that Joseph Smith taught into one project. While volume 3 will produce his teachings as found in various periodicals and formal quorum meetings, Forgotten Teachings is a significant contribution all by itself, boasting well over 900 pages of journal and memoire accounts spanning a host of talks, events, and meetings that were not used as source material in the Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith . Joseph prophesied that one day, the saints would look to private pioneer journals for history and doctrine. This volume makes the end result of that prophesy highly accessible. While some few accounts are not be impeccably reliable, other accounts are substantiated by multiple witnesses and corroborating details, and some personal accounts of his teachings are both heartwarming and expansive to both mind and soul. The Forgotten Teachings neither censors nor excuses any of Joseph’s teachings. It simply represents every record we have of Joseph’s teachings so readers can have a single resource that allows a fuller glimpse into his vast understanding of the plan of salvation.
