The TSL2591 photometric sensor is an advanced digital light sensor suitable for use in a variety of light conditions. Compared to low-cost cadmium sulfide cells, this sensor is much more capable, allowing Lux to calculate and be configured for different gain/timing ranges to detect up to 88,000 Lux over flight distances of 188 DULUX light.
The good part about this sensor is that it contains both infrared and full-spectrum diodes! This means you can measure infrared, full spectrum or human visible light separately. Most sensors can only detect one or the other, which does not accurately represent what the human eye sees (because we cannot perceive the IR light that is detected by most photodiodes). The sensor is much like the TSL2561 but has a wider range (and the interface code is different). The sensor has a huge dynamic range of 600 million :1! Unlike TSL2561 you can't change the 12C address, so keep that in mind. The built-in ADC device can take advantage of this with any microcontroller, even if it does not have an analog input.
