Skilled trade professionals, who grew up in the day when learning a trade was respectable and encouraged, have reached retirement age, and the pipeline of replacement laborers is not enough to fill the demand. Even though, at that time, many of our nation’s prosperous were owners of machine shops, welding, and plumbing companies, and the like, the message contrived by the college barons was brutal and persuasive. With the enlistment of willing high school guidance counselors as featured propagandists, they forcefully issued a dire edict: henceforth, any high school graduate who fails to attain the right to walk the hallowed halls of a university will be banned from achieving the American dream. The lie worked. College was tattooed on nearly everyone’s lips, and the nation’s parents suddenly took issue with the son or daughter who wanted to join the ranks of the “washouts” who were enrolled in a “lowly” trade school. So now the country is inundated with unskilled college graduates who are recipients of useless diplomas and a mountain of debt. Nevertheless, because of a staunch belief in the college “dream,” a young alumnus will proudly reference to potential employers the degree she earned five years ago in Women’s Studies from State University, even though she is currently living in her childhood bedroom while earning $13.65 an hour as a coffee shop barista. Meanwhile, due to a huge shortage of skilled trade professionals, millions of open trade positions will be left vacant. The nation urgently needs more security, fire, and service technicians, wind and solar energy technicians, 3D printing technicians, pipe fitters, sales representatives, plumbers, pile-driver operators, stonemasons, diesel mechanics, dental hygienists, cybersecurity experts, glaziers, physical therapy assistants, reinforcing iron and rebar workers, pilots, and elevator mechanics—who can earn $50 an hour without a college degree! In short, our nation is currently deprived of a workforce that is proficient in reading, writing, and math, and skilled in the professional trades that command great incomes and job security. This is the problem that plagues our nation. Its best solution is to qualify a vast army of parents as skilled educational and career guidance counselors. Thus, the aim of this book is to quickly and easily prepare parents to guide their children around the myriad of wicked pitfalls that are placed throughout our dysfunctional educational systems, and straight to the experiences that will truly bless their lives.
