The Republic of Venda was established by the then South African government in 1979 as an independent homeland for the Venda people, who have lived on the land for centuries. When South Africa moved to a democratic form of government, Venda was incorpo- rated into the new South Africa in 1994. It ceased to exist as a separate entity. Venda stamps, which were issued regularly over the 15 years of the republic's existence, depict the country’s people and their customs, its wildlife, its flora and its bird life.
