Release Plan—2024: How to Prepare for Success after Prison

Life changes after authorities bring a person into the criminal justice system. Statistics show what happens to most people after prison. Those who do not prepare frequently face a series of complications, including: Unemployment, Underemployment, Challenges recalibrating, Further problems with the law. Preparing for better outcomes requires an effective release plan. We think this workbook will help. My name is Michael Santos, and I am the founder of Prison Professors. From August 11, 1987, through August 12, 2013, I lived as a federal prisoner number 16377-004. My journey carried me through 9,500 days in high-security US penitentiaries, federal correctional institutions, and minimum-security camps. The strategies I offer in this workbook positioned me for success upon release. I’m convinced these strategies will help others prepare for a better outcome, regardless of what stage of the journey they’re in. Participants in this self-directed course will learn how to follow the steps that leaders taught me: Step 1: Define success Step 2: Create a plan Step 3: Set priorities Step 4: Build tools, tactics, and resources Step 5: Create accountability logs showing how you’re executing the plan. The release plan should evolve to show the progress a person makes. Each person should memorialize the steps he or she makes to prepare for success upon release. Through those efforts, a person can recalibrate, committing to self-advocacy and excellence.
