Empty Hand Anyos Prof. Remy taught Modern Arnis to beginners when he taught back in The Philippines. He taught people with no martial arts experience whatsoever. When he began teaching in the United States, however, he was primarily teaching already established or trained martial artists. He was teaching seminars, not in his own established school as he had back in the homeland. Most of the martial artists he taught were “strikers,” that is to say, karate, taekwondo, tang soo do, kenpo and kung fu practitioners. These are all stand-up kicking and punching arts and they all have one thing in common – they train in the solo exercises. The term for the solo exercise in Japanese and Okinawan karate is ‘kata.’ It is ‘poomse’ or ‘hyung’ in Korean martial arts.
