Frenchtown Family chronicles five generations of families who traveled to northwest Ohio during the nineteenth century from the Kingdom of Bavaria, the Kingdom of Westphalia, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Grand Duchy of Baden, the Electorate of the Palatinate, and the Bas-Rhin region of Alsace. The blood of these pioneer families converged in the 1940s at the small, Luxembourger settlement of Frenchtown, in Seneca County, Ohio—the place to which their descendants now trace part of their lineage. Frenchtown Family includes several gems: stories of pioneers and gold-diggers, settlers and soldiers, farmers and faith, recollections by elders, and even the diary of a Union soldier who participated in Sherman’s “March to the Sea.” This work sheds light on previously-unsung heroes through a number of historical sources: birth, marriage and death records from foreign lands, ship logs and immigration documents, U.S. census data, and church records from the Frenchtown, New Riegel, Alvada, Bascom and Tiffin communities where these families settled.
