The bergamot fruit is round, slightly larger than an orange, and not as yellow as a lemon. Its skin is thin and has a delicate fragrance, while its interior is extremely pungent, resembling that of a grapefruit. Bergamot is a fragrant citrus fruit from the tropical Citrus bergamia plant. Approximately 90% of the world’s bergamot production comes from Calabria, where the plant grows in a small area spanning about 100 miles along the coast, from Villa San Giovanni just north of Reggio to Monasterace. You might ask: how does bergamot taste? Unlike sweet oranges, bergamot is sour and not typically eaten fresh, although it is a good source of vitamins A, C, B1, B2, and potassium.
