Aluminum anodes are recommended for salt or brackish water & although magnesium offers the best protection in fresh water, aluminum anodes are also an acceptable substitute for magnesium anodes in fresh water. They are very helpful if you use your boat in fresh & salt water as magnesium anodes should not be used in salt or brackish water.

Note: The largest manufacturer of outboard motors & sterndrives stopped using zinc anodes over a decade ago & now uses aluminum anodes exclusively to protect underwater metals (see OEM Service bulletin 94-5). Also, it has been suggested by some that aluminum anodes are not for use in fresh water. Modern hot water tanks for use in your home contain anodes and the 2 recommended materials for the sacrificial anodes in hot water tanks are magnesium and aluminum.
