Traditionally the Cubanelle pepper is used extensively in the cuisine of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. However this pepper is growing in popularity all over due to its sweet mild flavor and versatility when used in the kitchen. The yellow/green thin walled pepper is especially suited for quick cooking or frying due to its low water content, in fact many prefer it to bell peppers for that reason. Cubanelle peppers are on the lower end of the heat scale measuring about 1000 on Scoville scale. In the garden, Cubanelle peppers are unique, often growing in imperfect shapes and changing color from green/yellow to shades of orange to red. Don't be surprised if the some of the peppers curl and twist a bit. No two seem to ever be alike—it's part of their charm. On a healthy note Cubanelle peppers are a great addition to any diet as they provide a high dose of beta carotene, vitamin C, bioflavonoids, phenolic acid, and plant sterols. Place plants 18-24 inches apart in a full sun location. These peppers can also be planted in large pots or containers due to the compact size. Peppers in general require a moist well-draining soil with mulching around the plants. The mulching helps preserve the moisture in the soil and discourage weed growth. These peppers can grow up to 24 inches tall and bear heavy yields of yellow/green fruits that will ripen to red/orange if left unpicked.
