Mexican flame vine (Pseudogynoxys chenopodioides) is a bright, happy, colorful, and easy-to-grow tropical vine that is native to Mexico and Honduras. It is cultivated elsewhere for its prolific, showy and very brightly colored, uniquely formed flowers that are highly attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds. It is easy to grow, quick to establish, and requires minimal care. Bright neon orange, five-petaled flowers appear as the days get longer and the nights warm up against a backdrop of sharply pointed, elongated, serrated deep green leaves about 3 inches long. It blooms repeatedly until mid to late fall. Care: When mature, plant in fertile, well-draining soil or potting media in a full sun area. Water as needed to maintain consistent soil moisture, but avoid overwatering. Overly saturated plants will become spotted, weak, thin, and fail to flower as expected. Feed a good quality, slow-release, bloom-boosting fertilizer with the initial planting and annually in spring thereafter. Prune after flowering to control size and shape. Avoid pruning in winter when plants are dormant. Indoor Growing: While the plant can be grown indoors, and foliage will generally grower larger and more lush in reduced light, modifications to increase light and provide a temperature differential during winter to stimulate flowering are typically required to produce blooms indoors. Climate: Mexican Flame Vine is a tropical plant recommended for growing in Zones 9, 10, and 11. Protection from cold temperatures is required in all Zones for the longest life, best appearance, and earliest flowering. Note that Zone recommendations are based on average temperatures and does not consider other variables. This plant become semi-dormant in winter, but still requires protection from cold. The product is a starter-sized plant with an approximate 4-inch-diameter root zone. The plant will be a minimum of 6 to 8 inches tall. It will not have buds or blooms on arrival. Starter-sized plants are intended for a gardener to plant and grow to their mature size.
