Pretty and luscious, this tomato has rich yellow undertones covered with pinkish-red striping These huge, beefsteak-type red-and yellow fruits with the high sugar content are delicious and pretty to slice because of the bi-coloring. They are a beautiful addition to salads and other dishes. Although it is called Mr. Stripey, don't expect perfect stripes. This is an heirloom and no two tomatoes are ever the same. Part of the fun of growing Mr. Stripey tomatoes is the surprise at harvest time. Fruit varies in color, and the stripes become more prominent as the fruit ages. Because of its unique colorings some growers think they are picking an unripe tomato. The mild character of the tomato flavor is best used where it is intended to blend in with other flavors such as in a pasta sauce or salad. The tomatoes have a low acid content which is good solution for people with low acidity tolerance. Place plants 24-36 inches apart in a sunny location with well- draining soil. When planting these and all other tomatoes, plant to a soil depth just beneath the first set of leaves. That first set of leaves (called cotyledon-which means the embryonic first leaves) will eventually fall off. Roots will form along the buried stem, establishing a stronger root, thus a stronger plant. Staking tomatoes upright or using a wire cage will increase production in these 60 inch tall plants.
