About this item

Alliecats: 53 Graphic Tales & Fun Puns About Cats

Mississippi said to Missouri, "If I put on my New Jersey, what will Delaware?" Virginia replied, "Alaska." This wordplay on states' names as vestments resembles the play and ambiguity in Alliecats , a wonderful collection of fifty-three graphic tales that catenate (link) meaning, sound, and likeness into clever puns. Novelist and literary critic BEN STOLTZFUS penned the introduction and assembled the words. His granddaughter ( cater-cousin ), ALLIE KIRSCHNER, drew the pictures. You will purr with satisfaction as she romps with feline grace, caterwauling from catalog to Catalina , although not without an occasional cataclysm or catastrophe . The purrposeful puns of Alliecats will amuse as you slide helplessly into a state of muscular rigidity, or catalepsy , while author and artist cater to your funny bone and make you laugh. " Alliecats is an absolutely delightful book--an amazing visual and verbal pleasure. Its whimsical cats illustrate the incredible number of English words that containt 'cat' and should expand the vocabulary of anyone, young or old, who has the joy of reading his unique book. I believe it will become a classic, like the works of Dr. Seuss." -- Juliet Flower MacCannell, Professor Emerita, University of California "Ben's graphic pen and Allie's brush show us that, whether as words or as drawings, puns are purrfect mirros where reflection is fun and fun is reflection. Welcoome to the looking glass of double takes!" -- Roch C. Smith, Professor Emeritus, University of North Carolina BEN STOLTZFUS is Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature and Creative Writing at the University of California, Riverside. He is a novelist, translator, literary critic, and internationally recognized inter-arts scholar. He has published twelve monographs of literary criticism and received many awards: Fulbright, Camargo, Gradiva, Humanities, Creative Arts, and MLA. He has published six novels and two collections of short stories. His most recent novel, Dumpster, for God's Sake, is a parody of Loviers City, a town whose motto is Cleanliness Is Next to Godliness. He lives in Riverside, California with Judith Palmer, his wife. Allie Kirschner is their granddaughter.   ALLIE KIRSCHNER, the artist, has enjoyed drawing ever since she can remember. She honed her skills as a visual arts major at Pioneer Valley Peforming Arts Charter School. She magtriculated to Greenfield Community College where she studied visual arts. She lives in Northampton, Massachusetts, with her cat Maizy.
