THESE ARE NOT FAIRYTALES. They are true accounts from women who have walked among dragons. They are true stories of human beings who were bought and sold as commodities to be used and then discarded. As you read each short story, you will find the chains of addiction, abuse, trauma, grief, and lost childhoods are heavy. You may find yourself asking: how much weight can the human soul bear? How much stress can the body endure? How dark is the shadow of death in this valley of dry bones? But as you persevere in reading each woman’s story, you will find that God is moving and working in unlikely places. The Holy One, who reigns over all creation and sits enthroned in the presence of angels, is also present among the contrite and lowly. How much can the soul & body endure? We need not look further than to Jesus Christ himself, who bore the weight of all sin in his body and soul on the cross. And like these women, He has emerged whole and victorious, setting captives free in his restorative wake, and slaying the dragons of death and darkness. These stories are not written for young readers. We would also like to issue a trigger warning for any survivors of abuse, trauma, or human-trafficking. ABOUT OUR PROCESS Each story in this book is a true story, even though the names, places, and identifying details may have been altered to protect the identities of survivors and any pending litigation. Each story was written with the assistance of a writing team who took great care in listening to the story of each survivor in a sensitive manner that did not cause re-traumatization. Each survivor was compensated for their time in telling their story.
