Written by an anonymous monk on the blank pages of a medieval theological manuscript in the early 15th century, The Byland Abbey Ghost Stories include stories of restless lost souls compelled to return from the dead to seek the help of the living to get into heaven. At times graphic and horrific, and at other times poignant and moving, they are regarded as some of the most important surviving examples of medieval ghost stories. This volume includes the original notes and Latin text, first transcribed by the writer M. R. James, opposite the English translations by the historian A.J. Grant.
