The Man Who Loved the Sea [TPB]

ABOUT THE BOOK From Old Hawai'i to the Vietnam War to pre-Aztec Mexico, this collection of Alan Brennert’s finest stories is a terrific mix of fantasy, horror, and science fiction, as varied as Brennert’s own career. From the poignant, deeply emotive tale of a woman who fancies herself “Queen of the Magic Kingdom” to the horrific afterlife an American soldier encounters in “Ma Qui” . . . from the quantum phantoms that haunt a young musical prodigy in “Echoes” to a future in which an innocent man is tormented by society’s last serial killer in “The White City” . . . these thirteen tales touch the heart—and sometimes chill the soul. CONTENTS INTRODUCTION by Alan Brennert MA QUI PUOWAINA QUEEN OF THE MAGIC KINGDOM SEA CHANGE ECHOES CRADLE THE MAN WHO LOVED THE SEA FANTASIES SKIN DEEP THE WHITE CITY HEALER STEEL HER PILGRIM SOUL Born in 1954 in Englewood, New Jersey, Alan Brennert—novelist, screenwriter, and play wright—has lived since 1973 in Southern California, where he received a B.A. in English from California State University at Long Beach and did graduate work at UCLA film school. His award-winning historical novel Moloka'i was a national bestseller whilst his next novel, Honolulu , won first prize in Elle magazine’s Literary Grand Prix for Fiction and was named one of the best books of 2009 by The Washington Post . Of his novel Palisades Park, People magazine said, “Brennert writes his valentine to the New Jersey playground of his youth in Ragtime style, mixing fact and fiction. It’s a memorable ride.” In February 2019, he published Daughter of Moloka'i , a long-awaited follow-up to Moloka'i . His work as a writer-producer for the television series L.A. Law earned him an Emmy Award and a People’s Choice Award in 1991. He has been nominated for an Emmy on two other occasions, once for a Golden Globe Award, and three times for the Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Teleplay of the Year. But he began his career in 1973 writing science fiction and fantasy short stories, and has continued to write in the genre up through the present day. He worked on the 1980s CBS revival of The Twilight Zone and in 1990 published an acclaimed fantasy novel, Time and Chance. His short story “Ma Qui” was honored with a Nebula Award in 1992, and a later story, “Echoes,” was nominated for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award. In 1992 he also adapted his Twilight Zone teleplay “Her Pilgrim Soul” into one-half of the libretto for the Alan Menken/David Spencer musical Weird Romance (the other half being Brennert and Spencer’s adaptation of the James Tiptree Jr./Alice Sheldon story “The Girl Who Was Plugged In”).
