This work seeks to bridge the gap between traditional architecture and the digital environment by choosing to study human nature and the mechanisms on how we understand space. This book's source originated from my master's degree theses. It is the fruit of many hours of researching, reading, thinking, discussing ideas, and writing for a year and a half. Seven years later, after testing the theory in the classroom, training the next generation of level designers in the AAA industry of Vancouver, discussing the process with fellow game designers and developing my own indie games, I decided to review the material and translate it to English. I hope everyone can understand better the digital space after reading this book. The three main topics covered by this book: Historical review of 3D representation in 2D display /media. From cave paintings to modern video games. - Similarities and differences between traditional architecture and level design, how humans perceive the space, and what lessons level designers can learn from architecture and vice versa. - A step-by-step creative process for interactive digital spaces. The semiotics and phenomenology approach in this book will provide a unique view on understanding human behaviour, facilitating the creative process of any tridimensional space. The framework proposed in this book will empower both beginners and experienced level designers (3D space designers) to develop solid experiences in their spaces.
