What Dwells in the Deep (Yikes! Discovery Series)

Deep-sea exploration can begin at even the earliest age . . . Let's go deeper!  What animals live in the deepest depths of the ocean? This book brings these rarely seen creatures—some that glow, some that hunt more than a mile below the surface, and one with eyes as big as your head!—to full-colour life for little eyes and little hands to enjoy.  A perfect first deep dive into the ocean to spark curiosity about the incredible creatures that share our planet. PreS-K-Part of the "Yikes!" board book series, this is an early primer for learning about specific creatures living in different depths of ocean water. Beginning with children in a boat on the water's surface, the unnamed but hospitable narrator invites readers to head deeper and deeper into the ocean, encountering a new and unusual animal at each level until reaching the snailfish near the ocean floor, and then to start over and do it all again. There is very little plot to navigate; the friendly text reads like a grocery list of simple but fascinating facts. Doing the heavy lifting are James's impressive illustrations that pop off the page, bringing each ocean creature to life. Artistic choices demonstrate great attention to detail, such as the water getting darker as the depths become greater. End notes briefly recap the nine animals covered, sharing key facts such as size, physical characteristics, and depth of ocean. VERDICT The conversational tone and brevity of introduction make this suitable for preschoolers listening to a read-aloud or as a gateway book for promoting interest in further reading on ocean animals. Recommended for larger board book collections.-Lauren Youngerα(c) Copyright 2011. Library Journals LLC, a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. No redistribution permitted. Originally from a small village in North Yorkshire, he now lives on the outskirts of the vibrant city of Leeds. He naturally took to doodling among the many arty folk in his family, he was influenced by Beano, Dandy comics, Warner Brothers, and Disney cartoons. He has many years of experience working in the creative industry, and has been fortunate enough to illustration a wide variety of children's books such as iMPRINT Macmillan's "Super Happy Party Bears" chapter books and greetings cards including licences for Disney: Muppets, Star Wars, Marvel, and Toy Story. I've also worked on illustrations for video game accessories, exhibition illustrations, illustrations for magazines and animated gifs. https://stejdesigns.wixsite.com/mysite/about
