About this item

Preke Town

When four children, Carlton, Jonathan, Maleek and Rosy are forced to leave their homes, they have very low expectations of the new town to which they are moving. It is so far far away, and despite the fun their parents tell them to expect, they need to see it to believe it. Once there, they're soon excited by the beautiful playground and the adventures to be had. Little do they know, however, that beneath the surface of Preke Town, the place they now call home, lies in hiding an evil force and an ugly green creature. On one dark, stormy night while the children were all alone, the evil one came out of hiding. From the shadows of the earth beneath appeared the big green creature with sharp yellow eyes, shiny teeth and large wings! The screams of the children are heard. Will the evil force and the creature destroy the children and their new home? Will someone come to their rescue, or will the children be brave and strong enough to defeat the evil one and his creature? Let’s see what awaits them in Preke Town. "Preke Town is interestingly entertaining. Moreover, it raises the question of filial piety in modern society. Good parenting, nurturing, respect and discipline are unapologetically presented. Thompson is neither subtle nor attenuating in his timely message. Like Papa, his resolute and just protagonist, he uses storytelling as the medium to address society's assault on traditions. With some help from folklore and a band of willing kids, he succeeds." - Dr. Glenville Ashby (Kaieteur News) "This book does not proselytize but if it did, it would tell you about the inner beauty within you that Christ can help you see, seize, appreciate and build."   - Gary O. Thompson Gary O. Thompson was born in Jamaica to Shirleigh and Hyacinth Thompson in January, 1981. Under their parental guidance, his intellect developed quickly which resulted in him succeeding at each level of his academic journey. Along with this academic success, grew his appreciation for literature, culture and cross-cultural experiences. So it was no surprise that after returning from a two-year work and travel trip to Britain, that Gary embarked on this ambitious mission to build an internationally recognized, cultural brand called "Preke Town". The brand is meant to fill a void observed in Jamaica, wherein the Jamaican culture is almost non-existent in contemporary children's entertainment. Jamaican television, for example, is void of Jamaican cartoons. Foreign video games have replaced culturally-rich, outdoor games, and even the Jamaican language is being frowned upon as if our place in the world is being replaced by the world we crave. The Preke Town idea was born in 2005. For Gary, this meant the development of this book, the production of animated versions of this story, the construction of a Preke Town theme park, plus the creation of wholesome children's games and other products. It was meant to be a lifetime of work; Gary O. Thompson's lifetime of work. However, it was not until 2015 that Gary recognized he had left out the most important element of success; Christ and so in the summer of 2016 he got baptized. Since then, the Preke Town movement has been given a lift and is now infused and intertwined with the word of God. Today, it's no longer just about what Gary wants to do with Preke Town, but about what God wants to do with Preke Town. Gary's Christian conversion has given him a new perspective on life. It has helped him to reshape, in his own mind, what a lifetime of work ought to be about, the importance of healthful living and how success ought to be measured. So his faith has led him into a healthier lifestyle; healthier physically, mentally and spiritually. This has brought him peace and joy that supersedes earthly accomplishments and worldly ambitions. He is now happily married and is a proud father who can attest to the presence and goodness of God.
