Anyone Can Be A Bully: I Saw What You Did (Bully Bantor)

Within the boundaries of our own backyards, we encounter and interact with people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds. When in school, at work or any public place, we expect a common level of social behavior. We don't expect everyone we meet to be nice, but when we meet someone that is mean we feel different after the exchange. We conjure images of what a bully looks like based on real experiences or images from media. Perhaps that image is of a rough, shabby frowning person. When we encounter a bully that does not look like our image, we are surprised. Why are we surprised that a bully can look like anyone? Like you and me. A bully can come from anywhere, such as your own backyard or school. At times, we can be bullied and sometimes we can be the bully.This story is true. It is the retelling of an actual event that occurred in high school, as witnessed and described by my son, Nicholas A. Baker. I wish for every child to grow up in a nurturing environment free of bullying.Bullying transcends generations, crosses societal boundaries and infringes on our developmental process. My hope is that one day all people understand that kindness is a gift that we give to others in the present.
