At the turn of the 20th century, the firms of Carter, Macy & Co. and George H. Macy were the major importers of tea into the United States from Japan, China, and Ceylon. It was estimated that they brought in one-sixth of all tea imported into this country. During the second half of the 19th century the firm had grown from a small grocery operation into a major business with extensive facilities in Yokohama, Kobe, Shanghai, Formosa, Calcutta, and Colombo. It was a prosperous company. In 1916 the American International Corporation took over a majority interest in the company, and George H. Macy retired from business. When he died in January 1918, the American International Company took over the remaining Macy family interest in the company. Many of the present day descendants of George Macy have wondered what happened to the company. Here is all we know. . . .
