About this item

Nonverbal Communication: Studies and Applications

From intrapersonal communication to face-to-face interactions, public addresses to computer-mediated communication, nonverbal communication lays a foundation for understanding what is important to effective message development, transmission, and understanding via nonverbal codes and subcodes. The seventh edition of Nonverbal Communication: Studies and Applications demonstrates the importance of nonverbal communication in all settings and all contexts. Readers learn the vital role nonverbal communication plays in everyday interactions, as well as nonverbal theories and practices that are key to becoming a better communicator. Nina-Jo Moore explores nonverbal communication through a unique sensory lens with a focus on how nonverbal communication is processed through our five senses. The text examines how different communication scholars approach the study of nonverbal communication, how our brains process this communication style, and other factors that affect how we use and interpret nonverbal messages, including age, cultural backgrounds, race, status differences, and sex and gender differences. The seventh edition features enhanced emphasis on the application of contemporary research findings, more than 175 new sources and studies, fresh and expanded material on computer-mediated communication, and an appendix that explains how to effectively conduct communication research. Nina-Jo Moore is Professor of Communication and Assistant Chairperson at Appalachian State University, and the former Associate Dean of the College of Fine and Applied Arts. She received her B.A. from the University of South Florida, her M.A. from the University of Georgia, and her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. She has taught nonverbal communication courses for more than thirty years, in addition to other interpersonal, organizational, intercultural, and public communication courses. She has published in the area of mentoring, distance learning, intercultural education, and rhetoric and public address. In writing this new edition, I tried to mesh the historical research on nonverbal communication with the newer studies to build a research-based but practical approach to the study of nonverbal communication.  Since this is the fourth edition I have written (with co-authors Don Stacks and Mark Hickson authoring Editions 1-3, and then co-authoring with them Editions 4-6), I have tried to create what reviewers have asked for in each new edition.  I have a strong interest in how the digital age has affected nonverbal communication, so I have added many points about social media throughout the text. I also have a strong interest in intercultural differences, so I have included many examples about cultural differences. Like many other changing phenomena in today's society, I include those changes in the examples in this new 7th. Edition.  My one point of consternation is that this text was completed about two weeks before the coronavirus descended upon us, and I was not able to include new issues about how much this affected nonverbal communication.  From facial expressions to touch and space, we are living in a whole new nonverbal world.
