ISBN: 978-1-4490-0044-8 Chapter One THE DOOR OF WILL Far, far away, a grayish colored rodent named Voyle speaks in a creaky voice as his nose twitches. "There is a girl coming to Efil." A terrible rumble shakes the ground. The rat, Voyle, stands on as an angry voice bellows from a dark thrown in the center of the cold, damp room. "When and where is she from? I want you to find out everything there is to know about her. She will come in handy in our plan. We will make her do what we want, or else she will be destroyed. Now, GO!" The rat shook in fear and delight as he snickered and scurried away. Tess's silky blonde hair swung around softly when the phone rang. Nicole dropped her fork into her mashed potatoes while Ashley and Jennie looked anxiously at their mom and step-dad, John. "I'll get it." Tess's mom, Faith, said rising from the dinner table. All eyes watched as she answered the anticipated phone call in a forced, calm voice. "Hello? Yes, this is Tess's mother. I see. Tomorrow morning? So soon? All right, we'll work it out. Thank you." Faith walked back to the table and sat down quietly. "That was the hospital. The doctors want Tess to go in tomorrow morning. Her test results today showed her liver failure, and they feel that we cannot waste any more time. She will have to stay in the hospital until they can find a new liver for her." Faith sighed. "How long will that take?" Jennie asked. Jennie was four-years-old and the youngest of the four girls. "We don't know, Jennie. Hopefully, not very long." John answered trying to sound cheerful. That night after the dinner dishes were done and homework had been completed, Tess went to her room to begin packing. At twelve-years-old, going into the hospital was a common experience for Tess. She was born with a genetic disorder called Cystic Fibrosis. She understood that her organs were coated in sticky goo, which caused lung trouble and made it hard for her to digest food. This meant many medications, as well as regular trips to the hospital. However, when Tess wasn't dealing with her illness, she was full of life. She took tap at a local dance studio and was a talented artist. At five-years old, she won her first real art contest and had been drawing ever since. Other kids at school were always asking her to draw for them. Tess sat on her bed and looked around her bedroom. "I love this room." She thought out loud. She had recently redone the exercise room in the basement and made it into her bedroom. The walls were light lavender, which made it look like an early morning sunrise, when the sun showers the world with a bright purple hue. It was like having her apartment living in the lowest level of the three-story house. She had her own bathroom, a recreation room with a pool table, and a full kitchen, which she was not allowed to cook in. There was a guest bedroom across from hers that her grandparents stayed in when they came to visit. Being the oldest of four girls, Faith thought Tess needed her own space. Faith was pretty cool about knowing what made Tess happy. "Now," Tess said speaking to her many stuffed animals, Barbie dolls, and dozens of Beanie babies, "What should I ..." "Can we come in?" called a voice from the other side of the door. Nicole was the second to oldest girl. She was thirteen months younger than Tess; however, she was a good bit taller and larger than Tess. Nicole had just made the Jr. Varsity Basketball team at their private school. "Yes." Tess yelled. "Come on in and help me pack some of this stuff." Tess opened the door and glared at her other younger sister, Ashley. "Take it off, Ashley! NOW!" Tess yelled. "What? You never wear this shirt, and anyway, you won't need it in the hospital." Ashley said defensively. Ashley was the third girl, nine-years-old and just starting the fourth grade. She and Tess had trouble getting along from time to time due to Ashley's strong will and Tess's desire to be Ashley's boss. "Ashley, go c
