About this item

On the Go with Senior Services: Library Programs for Any Time and Any Place

Not only does this book offer insights into how to better serve all seniors, but it also provides complete step-by-step instructions for dozens of exciting and engaging programs that can be held both onsite and offsite. While serving the senior population is a standard service in public libraries, it has traditionally focused on in-house programs and homebound services. On the Go with Senior Services is different. With this inspiring and practical guide, your library can rejuvenate its in-house services with new programs and also take them on the road―to retirement and assisted living communities, adult day care programs, and nursing homes and rehab centers. With such diversity in the senior population, this book describes strategies for designing senior programs that fit your community's needs. It offers a trove of templates for programs that range from crafts, word games, pop culture, pets, holidays, humor, mysteries, technology, and music. It offers tips and suggestions on how to interact with seniors, including those who may have a variety of physical and cognitive needs. There are also guidelines for working with individuals suffering from dementia. A robust list of further resources is provided. The growing population of seniors presents librarians with new challenges and opportunities, and this book is a valuable guide to navigating and embracing them. I found that the first part of the book gave wonderful insights about market research prior to program development and implementation, and that the ideas collected in the volume are diverse, easily adaptable, and clearly target key needs of this population. Goodreads Andrew 2,305 reviews67 followers Follow November 28, 2021 Published in 2020, Phyllis Goodman gives Library Service members a great glimpse into how to start and provide fundamental and expanded services to the Senior population of the community. The programs use a simplistic approach to their styles, which allows for any budget or library size to provide at least some form of service in Programming Services for Seniors. From assessing the community to building relationships with both mobile and immobile senior groups, the book covers multiple options. Laughter and Humor (from Stuffed Pets to Candy, anything for a laugh is a good time) Time (Holidays, Trivia and History Programs) Places and Puzzles (Mysteries and Armchair Travel) Words and Stories (Storytelling, Storytime, Book Groups) Art (Crafts and Art-Based Outreach) Mind and Memory (Memory Cafes amongst many others) Technology (Introductory endeavors into Technologies) Many Libraries may already be providing these services, outreach, kits, book groups, story times, workshops or craft groups to your senior population. Whether you're starting from square one OR square 101, there is something everyone can glean from this resource. I really like that Phyllis includes a lot of the outreach services for seniors that are out there nationally that can be reached out to, or adapted to fit your own community's needs. genre-non-fic-adult library-adults-and-seniors november-2021 Phyllis Goodman is a recently retired librarian who worked more than 25 years in library services and education.
