In the 1980s and 90s, Dail Bridges worked in the Bering Sea north of Alaska and in the waters surrounding New Zealand as a Foreign Fisheries Observer. She lived aboard Japanese and Soviet fishing trawlers for months at a time, working side by side with the crew. This book is not a story that is very much about fish, though there is that. Instead, it is mostly about doing something that you?ve never done before, for which nothing can prepare you, and all that this brings with it. Born and raised in North Carolina, Neva Dail Bridges moved to Seattle, Washington in 1984 to be a Foreign Fisheries Observer for the National Marine Fisheries Service. In addition to her sea-going adventures, she has traveled in Africa, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and the United Kingdom, as well as lived on the Puerto Rican Island of Vieques, where she managed a guest house.
