African Rhythms and Independence for Drumset: A Guidebook for Applying Rhythms from North, Central, and West Africa to Drumset, Book & CD

Mokhtar Samba's powerful drumming can be heard throughout the world on recordings and tours with Salief Keita, Youssou N'Dour, Richard Bona, Joe Zawinul, Graham Haynes, Jean-Luc-Ponty, l'Orchestre National de Jazz (ONJ), and many others. Mokhtar's Moroccan/Senegalese heritage, mixed with the jazz and Afro-fusion atmosphere of Paris, has created one of the most exciting drummers of our time. This book takes the student through several rhythms from all over the continent of Africa. Mokhtar breaks each rhythm down into movements, or exercises, that help the student develop the coordination and time feel necessary to play the various patterns that offer multiple permutations of these rhythms. As Mokhtar Samba explains in the introduction to this excellent book, there were no drumset players in African bands as recently as fifteen years ago. But by now an African kit tradition has been established, and Samba who s played with, among others, Youssou N Dour and Jean-Luc Ponty takes the clearest, most direct route toward explaining it to a new audience. Much like Afro-Cuban drumset patterns, the exercises in African Rhythms are hand-percussion phrases adapted for the kit. The book is divided into six sections according to regional musical style. (Mali/Guinea, Senegal, Cameroon, and North Africa are represented.) Many of Samba s beats feature fairly simple mechanics, while some of the polyrhythmic material is downright tough. (Wisely, difficult rhythms are broken up into building blocks.) Either way, the patterns can be tricky for those unused to African concepts like, say, the placement of hi-hat accents in Gnawa music. The exercises also require a particular loose-limbed feel that falls between straight and swung time. That s why the companion CD is pure gold: On it, Samba plays many of the book s beats, with and without hand-drumming accompaniment. This ensures that the student never drifts too far out to sea. Samba often ends the recorded examples with short fills that are not written into the exercises. Though this may be confusing at first, the fills give the player an idea of how to authentically embellish what is presumably an exotic drumming style. --Michael Parillo, Modern Drummer Magazin Gli Ultramarine sono stati per un po di anni un gruppo di culto, i loro cd venivano scambiati in maniera carbonara fra i più famosi professionisti della batteria italiana alla ricerca di idee fresche, di ritmiche esplosive, di groove divertenti. Dietro ai tamburi degli Ultramarine c era Mokhtar Samba, batterista africano trapiantato in Francia, che ha lavorato con alcuni degli artisti etnici più importanti: Yossou N Dour, Carlinhos Brown, Salief Keita. Dopo più di dieci anni di studi Mokhtar ha preparato African Rhythms , il primo metodo per batteria che affronta in modo serio e sistematico i ritmi del Nordafrica e del Golfo di Guinea. Ecco quindi le ritmiche Gnawa, Maghreb, Mangambe, Bikutsi, Doudoumba e Sabar. Lo Gnawa è un genere musicale magrebino interpretato con una base di charleston in 6/8. Sempre in 6/8 sono le ritmiche Maghreb, che hanno oggi una grandissima diffusione grazie al Rai, la musica popolare algerina. Dal 6/8 si passa al 12/8 del Mangambe, originario del Camerun, che oggi è molto popolare a Parigi. Nella capitale francese è popolare anche il Bikutsi, caratterizzato dalla cassa in ostinato e che può essere interpretato in 12/8 o in 4/4. Il Doudoumba è la danza dell uomo forte dell Africa occidentale, la cui melodia è disegnata dalla grancassa e ha una serie di varianti dipendenti dall area di provenienza, Mali o Guinea. Infine il Sabar, la musica delle orchestre del Senegal, basata su parti molto complesse con la clave in 12/8. African Rhythms , scritto in inglese e francese, è un metodo molto curato anche nella gradualità degli esercizi. Dedicato a batteristi esperti, non mancherà di affascinare i grandi professionisti, grazie alla magìa delle ritmiche Bikutsi, energiche e danzanti e di quelle Doudoumba, complicate e musicali. Il Cd che accompagna il libro aiuta chi non ha una perfetta padronanza della lettura ritmica ed è una grande fonte di idee; la sua registrazione lascia trasparire qualche suono sporco e alcuni fill fuori programma, piccoli difetti che impreziosiscono il groove, rendendolo ancora più musicale. L opera di Mokhtar Samba è uno dei metodi più rivoluzionari e innovativi degli ultimi vent anni, va direttamente al cuore della batteria e aiuta a riscoprire la musicalità dello strumento. Chi affronta questo genere di studi va alla scoperta delle radici del ritmo, seguendo sentieri tracciati da grandi musicisti come Art Blakey e Elvin Jones, sentieri che ora diventano strade grazie all ottimo lavoro di Mokhtar. --Mario A.
