The Dark Mage has haunted Karis since his 8th birthday, ever present and malevolent. Karis doesn't know who he is or what he wants, but he dreams of being free of the abiding evil he senses. But Karis finds a partner in his fight against the dark mage when he goes to visit his cousin, Malin, in Godsel. Unfortunately, the Dark Mage is attacking on multiple fronts: Karis and Malin must learn to resist and repel the dark mage's attempts to take Karis over, determine who is attacking the citizens of Godsel and effectively defend them, and follow the clues about the Bearers of Light and the Fire Gates left by Karis' great-grandfather. They must do all this while still maintaining the fiction that all is well and it's just business as usual. They are joined in their fight by Rilse, Malin's wolf companion, and Myrrha, a sound-weaver of extraordinary power with a mysterious past.
