This Self-Care journal was created specifically for the Special Needs community to encourage beginning a self-care practice.Self-care is any activity that we engage in to support our mental, emotional and physical well-being. The special needs community, in particular, experiences numerous benefits from learning self-care. It's a practiced skill that improves confidence, self-respect and self-compassion. These are attributes of character that we at Villa de Vida, Inc. want to nurture and inspire.Many adults with developmental disabilities struggle with mental and physical impairments that create feelings of intense anxiety and isolation. A history of co-occurring mental health issues is common. These brain-based conditions can affect emotions, behavior and thinking. Sometimes this can create extreme and unexpected changes in the ability to process emotions and effectively communicate feelings. Self-care is the bridge from feeling misunderstood, overwhelmed and afraid to feeling understood and experiencing a sense of calm and well-being.The sector of our population of adults that has neuro-divergent conditions or developmental disabilities is more at risk for depression, anxiety and obsessive behaviors. For this reason, they need extra support in developing self-reliant habits that support mindfulness and self-care. Thriving with a differently wired brain and body can be challenging. Self-care is a powerful way to eliminate stress, heal the body and mind, and create a sense of well-being.
